Chapter 29

Sloan scooted down on the bed. “If you promise not to laugh...”

“Why would I laugh?”

“Because it’s this horrible huge belly.” She scrunched her face.

He shook his head. “Maybe men should bear the children. They’d all be drinking beer and admiring their guts. Okay, so the beer part is clearly bad. But Sloan, it’s a huge, amazing belly with my children in it.”

Still she held out until he said it.

“I promise, no laughing.”

He waited while she slowly lowered herself onto her back and lifted her shirt from where it covered her stomach. “Wait. You’ll see them.”

He was looking at her face, and that would never do. “You have to watch my belly, or you’ll miss it.”

As he stared, she sent up a silent prayer, thankful that she hadn’t gotten any stretch marks yet. She tried desperately not to squirm under his gaze, so she started talking again. “I think I want to paint the nursery yellow. Not too bright, not too primary, and probably put little animals around.”

“What kind of animals?”

“I have no idea. What do you think?”

His eyes were still trained on her belly, but he answered right away. “Lions and tigers and bears—”

“Oh, my.” She giggled. “What if they’re girls?”

“So? Their Daddy’s going to teach them how to throw a ball and fight and—”

“What! How to fight?”

“Yes, fight.” He nodded almost to himself. “How else will I be able to send them off to kindergarten? What if there are bullies? What if my daughter has to teach some boy to respect women?”

Sloan felt her giggles bubble to the surface even as she fought down images of Max seeing his small blonde daughters off to school with reminders of karate moves. “Trust me, the little boys won’t be all over them in kindergarten.”

“Trust me, they will.” And he looked her square in the eyes. “I’ve seen their mother.”

She blushed, she could feel it, but he didn’t break eye contact. Just then, the babies saved her. “Look!” She pointed to her belly and, in a flash, he wasn’t looking in her eyes any more.

“Oh, my gosh.”

She knew he was seeing bumps form and move across her belly. The little aliens were in there, and she had moments where it was almost scary that you could see so much movement beneath her skin.

“Yeah.” She nodded. Still feeling the one on the left turning, and finally kicking a few times to settle down. She winced when one of the kicks landed somewhere in the vicinity of her liver.

“Are you okay?” He wasn’t looking at her belly anymore. “Maybe we should stop this.”

“I’m fine. I got kicked in the guts is all,” He started to protest but she spoke over him. “I’m going to get kicked regardless, you might as well get to see them move.”

“If you’re sure...” He trailed off.

“I’m sure.” The babies had settled down for a moment, so she started prattling again. “I think I’m going to put them in a cradle here beside the bed for the first few months.
